Valka yoga mat review (and give away!)

Updated: Sep 28, 2020

I’ve had my eye on these yoga mats for a long time. I first spotted them on Ethically Kate's blog and have seen them pop up on a few other eco bloggers feeds as well as my Saturday morning yoga class. My previous yoga mat was an old one I found discarded at my parents by my sister when she left New Zealand. I noticed the last few times I’ve used it, there were pink foam bits left on the floor. Never a good sign!

I try to request birthday gifts that I really need and/or will truly love. This year I requested my husband order one of these and he dutifully did so.

It’s really a rather beautiful yoga mat and one I know I’ll still be shaking out in years to come to whip out my downward dog. The size is great and easy to carry with the included strap. They are heavier than your usual pvc mat but I already feel used to it.

The grip is a little different to a plastic mat which apparently will serve you better in sweaty hot yoga but make it a little harder in a regular class. I haven’t found it too much of a problem. Apparently you can sprinkle a little water on the mat if you find you’re slipping.

Valka Yoga is a NZ owned company but the yoga mats are ethically made in China from sustainably sourced organic cork and natural rubber which grips well to the floor. The materials are fused together with heat instead of any weird toxic adhesives.

I’ve also learnt that Cork is naturally antimicrobial. The cork layer naturally kills germs and bacteria. Plus it smells a lot better when your face planting the floor! The cork is harvested by hand without cutting the tree down.

They also work with Carbon Neutral and plant a native tree for every order which is a bit sweet! If you want to read more about this it's all on their website here.

I love that they’ve really thought outside the box here, with sustainability at heart. Yoga and caring for our papatūanukureally goes hand in hand. I know I’m more able to care about the environment when I take care of myself and take time for personal restoration away from the demands of motherhood. Yoga gives me this and I’m so grateful to have a beautiful yoga mat to practice on!

When you're due for a yoga mat upgrade, consider ditching the plastic and opt for a Valka cork yoga mat.

Great news! Valka Yoga has agreed to giveaway a cork yoga mat to one lucky reader. The giveaway is for NZ residents only. Find me on Instagram @social_earthlings to find out more!

Please note that the giveaway is in no way associated with Facebook or Instagram.
